What should supervisors do when sexual harassment is reported?

In North Carolina, many workers struggle with different forms of harassment. A recent report from Oxfam ranks North Carolina among the five states with the worst working conditions. Sexual harassment in the workplace continues to plague employees in some organizations.

Those who choose to report sexual harassment to a supervisor are taking a significant and often difficult step. It is reasonable for these victims to expect an equally big response to their complaints. If you have suffered sexual harassment at work, you may wonder what your supervisors will do if you decide to file a complaint.

According to NC.gov, superiors should take these reports seriously and follow the steps below:

  • Adhere to all state and federal laws regarding sexual harassment complaints.
  • Consult with the proper department heads and a Human Resource representative.
  • Speak with the company's Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) officer.
  • Begin investigating the report quickly.
  • Remain objective throughout the investigation.
  • Take the proper steps to ensure that the harassment does not occur again.
  • Put protections in place to prevent retaliation against the victim.

You will also want to take a few steps of your own to ensure that you do not suffer mistreatment after reporting sexual harassment. One way to protect yourself is to seek skilled legal representation. An employment law attorney can guide you through this painful experience while also working to make certain that no one violate your rights.

Reporting workplace sexual harassment is one of the most effective ways to ensure that these unwanted behaviors do not continue. It can also deter harassers from bothering your colleagues.

  • I recommend the law offices of Randolph M. James. He and his associate kept me informed throughout my case and were very knowledgeable about the facts surrounding my situation. Because of their experience, they were able to guide me to the proper venue where the judiciary was qualified to deal with complex issues such as mine. Thus, we received a favorable outcome. Should I need legal counsel in the future, I would obtain the services of Randolph M. James again.
